Manchester Coach Rambles

Led Walks using Coach and Public Transport

All you need to know about our Public Transport Walks

Sunday walks are usually about ten miles and will often incorporate some climbing but can sometimes be up to twelve miles. These distances are not particularly daunting as the time spent on the walk is usually six or seven hours. No walks should present a problem to a reasonably fit newcomer but please ring the Sunday Public Transport Walks Officer, Jeff, 0161 766 4683,  if you need guidance about whether a walk would be suitable for you.

If the walk leader thinks that the walk is more challenging than would normally be expected this will be noted in the programme.

Call for Leaders - If you are interested to lead a walk, please contact Jeff, 0161 766 4683.

Meet up point for the Sunday Walks - This will be either at a train station, bus stop or tram stop.  At the train station the leader usually will meet the party at the entrance of the platform of the departing train.  Leader will definitely meet the party on the platform at the destination station.  For walks by bus or tram, the leader will meet party by the bus or tram stop.

Membership - Walks are opened to the public -  Members and Non Members  of The Ramblers.  However,  Non Members who regularly take part in the walks would need to join membership of The Ramblers.  To join the Ramblers, details on the Ramblers website.

 What you need so to enjoy our walks

Below is a guide to what you need on a walk. It is not a definitive list but gives you an idea of what to expect.

  • Good footwear. Most of our walks will involve various combinations of footpaths, bridleways, tracks, roads, rocks and lumpy boggy moorland. You need to have the right footwear to protect your feet
  • Food for lunch.  All walks are planned assuming that participants will bring a packed-lunch. Once on the walk there may be nowhere to buy food so ensure that you buy a sandwich in town prior to boarding the train/bus.
  • Water or non alcoholic drinks
  • Water-proof clothing
  • Warm clothing. All our destinations have the potential to be a bit chilly; especially if the wind gets up. It's wise to always have a fleece, hat and gloves in your ruck-sack
  • Torch for Winter excursions.  It can get dark very early at 4-5.00pm.

Please note that:-

  • Footpath issues can be reported direct to the Ramblers via the Pathwatch webpage or app;
  • Be nice to your leader! They are trying to make your day enjoyable!
  • You should be reasonably fit to join the guided walks
